How to Plan for Hajj and Umrah Financially

Hajj is one of the five pillars of Islam, obligatory once in a lifetime for every Muslim who is physically and financially able. With package costs from Western countries exceeding $10,000 per person, careful multi-year planning is essential. This calculator helps you turn the dream of pilgrimage into a concrete monthly savings goal.

Understanding Package Tiers

Hajj and Umrah packages fall into four broad tiers, distinguished mainly by hotel proximity to the Haram, room occupancy, and group size:

  • Economy — Hotels 1-2 km from the Haram, quad occupancy, large groups (often 100+ pilgrims). Lowest cost but longest walks and least personalized service.
  • Standard — Hotels within 500m-1km of the Haram, triple occupancy, medium groups. The sweet spot for most families.
  • Premium — Hotels within 300m, double occupancy, smaller groups, often with meal packages included.
  • VIP — Haram-view hotels, single or double rooms, private transport, dedicated guide, full board meals. Premium experience at premium cost.

Hajj vs Umrah Cost Differences

Umrah can be performed year-round and is significantly cheaper — typically 30-50% of Hajj cost. Ramadan Umrah carries immense spiritual reward but doubles the price due to demand. Off-peak Umrah in Rajab, Sha'ban, or Muharram offers the best value.

Saudi Government Fees (Included in Package)

The Saudi Ministry of Hajj and Umrah charges several fees that are bundled into every package: Umrah visa fee (SAR 300 / ~$80), municipality taxes on hotel bookings, and the new Saudia-package integration fee. The 2026 change reduced the Umrah visa entry window from 90 days to 30 days — affecting trip length planning.

Building Your Savings Plan

Once you know your target cost, divide by the months available to find your required monthly contribution. Most financial advisors recommend automating this through a dedicated savings account. Consider these strategies:

  • Open a separate "Hajj Fund" account at an Islamic bank to avoid commingling
  • Set up automatic monthly transfers on payday
  • Apply annual Zakat refunds, Eid gifts, and bonuses directly to the fund
  • Consider a Sharia-compliant diminishing musharakah investment if you have 5+ years
  • Cut one discretionary expense (coffee, dining out) and redirect the savings
