How This Zakat Calculator Works

Zakat is the third pillar of Islam — an obligatory annual charity of 2.5% on qualifying wealth that has been in your possession for one lunar year (hawl). Our calculator automates every step of this process using authentic scholarly formulas.

Step 1: Nisab Threshold Check

Nisab is the minimum wealth a Muslim must own before Zakat becomes obligatory. There are two established thresholds: 85 grams of gold or 595 grams of silver. The silver nisab is significantly lower in monetary terms and is recommended by the majority of contemporary scholars — including the Fiqh Council of North America — because it benefits the poor more directly. Our calculator defaults to the silver standard but lets you switch.

Step 2: Inventory Zakatable Assets

Zakatable assets include cash, gold, silver, investments, business inventory, agricultural produce, livestock, and receivables. Your primary residence, personal vehicles, household furniture, and tools of trade are not zakatable. We list every common asset class in the form above.

Step 3: Subtract Immediate Liabilities

Outstanding debts that are due for payment now can be deducted from your zakatable assets. Long-term debts (like a mortgage) are calculated on the principal due within the next 12 months. This calculator uses the simpler "debts due now" approach favored by the Hanafi school.

Step 4: Apply the 2.5% Rate

If your net zakatable wealth exceeds the Nisab threshold, multiply by 2.5% (which equals 1/40). The result is your Zakat due for the year. If your wealth is below Nisab, no Zakat is owed — but consider giving voluntary Sadaqah.

When to Pay

Zakat is due once per lunar year on the anniversary (hawl) of when you first reached the Nisab threshold. Many Muslims choose Ramadan for the added reward. You may pay in a lump sum or in monthly installments throughout the year — as long as the full amount is paid by your Zakat due date.
