How Faraid Works

Islamic inheritance law (Faraid) is detailed in the Quran (Surah An-Nisa 4:11-12, 4:176) and refined through Hadith and centuries of jurisprudence. The system is mathematically precise and ensures fixed shares for close relatives.

Order of distribution:

  1. Funeral expenses (from the estate)
  2. Outstanding debts
  3. Bequests (Wasiyyah) up to 1/3 of remaining estate
  4. Remaining estate distributed per Faraid rules

Key fixed shares (Quranic):

  • Wife with children: 1/8 · without children: 1/4
  • Husband with children: 1/4 · without children: 1/2
  • Mother with descendants or multiple siblings: 1/6 · otherwise 1/3
  • Father with descendants: 1/6 + residue · without: residue
  • Daughter alone: 1/2 · multiple: 2/3 shared
  • Son: 2× daughter's share (residuary)

This calculator handles common scenarios. For complex cases (e.g., simultaneous deaths, missing heirs, special grandfather situations), consult a qualified scholar. Read our complete Faraid guide →
