How This Calculator Works

This calculator follows the majority position of Sunni schools of jurisprudence. Zakat is 2.5% of qualifying wealth held for one lunar year, provided the total exceeds the Nisab threshold. We use the silver-based Nisab (currently around $565) by default, as it is more beneficial to the poor — this aligns with the Hanafi and many contemporary scholars' preference.

The calculation steps:

  1. Sum all Zakatable assets (cash, gold, silver, investments, trade goods, rental income, property for resale)
  2. Subtract immediate liabilities (debts due within 12 months)
  3. Compare the net total against the Nisab threshold
  4. If eligible, multiply the net total by 2.5%
