About Zakat al-Fitr
Zakat al-Fitr (also called Fitrah or Sadaqat al-Fitr) is a special charity obligatory on every Muslim at the end of Ramadan — including infants, the elderly, and the poor (who pay if they can afford one day's food). It is distinct from annual Zakat and must be paid before the Eid al-Fitr prayer.
The amount is one sa'a (approximately 3 kilograms or 4 gave-handed handfuls) of the local staple food per person. Most contemporary scholars also permit paying the monetary equivalent, which makes distribution easier for both giver and recipient organizations.
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: "The fasting of the month of Ramadan will not be raised (to heaven) until Zakat al-Fitr is paid." (Reported by Abu Dawud)
Recipients are the same eight categories mentioned in Quran 9:60 — primarily the poor and needy, so they too can celebrate Eid without worry.
